The Arts –
Visual Arts

Materials

  • Visual procedural list outlining steps to the learning task
  • White or brown rice
  • Ziploc bags
  • Vinegar
  • Food coloring
  • Containers/jar/pans
  • Small items or toys to put in the rice (optional)

Preparation

  • Choose colours for combinations.
  • Prepare visual procedural list (steps) with words, pictures or symbols.
  • In a ziploc bag, add 1 cup of rice, 1 teaspoon of food colouring, 1 teaspoon of vinegar.
  • Close and seal the bag.
  • Shake the bag until all rice is coloured.
  • Add additional food colouring to mix colours
  • Set coloured rice out to dry.
  • Carry on with the next bag and create further colour combinations.
  • Small objects such as stones, animals, fish, dinosaurs, buttons, carts can be added.

Extensions:
For early learners, focus on 1 colour at a time for colour identification.
Alter the intensity of colours to create shades of colour mixtures.



Verbal Prompts

Let’s mix some colours!
First, measure out rice into a bag.
Next, add 1 tsp. of food colouring to the bag
Next, add 1 tsp. vinegar to the bag.
Then, seal the bag and shake to mix colour.
Then, add an additional colour of food colouring to bag.
Then, seal the bag and shake to mix colours around.
Notice the new colour that was created!
Then, follow the same process with another colour combination to see what can be created.

Finally, you can add small toys or items in the rice bags to play and discover
